What are the phases of the moon?
You probably already know that the moon goes through different shapes, but do you know why?
Well, the phases of the moon happen because of its position in relation to the sun and Earth.
As the moon orbits around Earth, different parts of it are lit up by the sun, creating the different phases.
The cycle starts with the new moon, when the side facing Earth is completely in shadow, and then moves through waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and finally waning crescent before starting all over again.
