Free Parts of a Chicken Worksheet

Learning about animals is always a hit in our house, and this parts of a chicken worksheet turned out to be a fun way to explore basic anatomy with younger kids.

It focuses on six key features—like the beak, claws, and wattles—and includes different versions for labeling, coloring, and matching.

Whether you’re doing a farm unit or just need a simple science activity, this anatomy labeling worksheet is a great place to start.

Colorful printable worksheet titled “Parts of a Chicken,” featuring a cartoon chicken with arrows pointing to different labeled body parts including wattle, hackles, beak, comb, claw, and wing. The chicken is partially colored in pink, gray, yellow, and outlined in black, and students are instructed to match the labels to the correct body parts. A container of colored pencils is visible on the side.

Chicken Anatomy Worksheet

This parts of a chicken worksheet set includes three printable pages using the same labeled chicken illustration.

One version has kids draw arrows to each body part, another includes arrows pointing to empty boxes, and the final version offers a helpful word bank for easier matching.

Each worksheet reinforces six key parts: comb, claws, wings, wattles, hackles, and beak.

Here’s a quick look at what each part does—great context for kids as they complete the worksheet:

Comb – This fleshy crest on top of the head helps chickens regulate their temperature. It also plays a role in courtship and overall health.

Claws – Sharp and curved, claws help chickens scratch, perch, and move around. They’re important for both balance and defense.

Wings – Chickens use their wings more for balance and communication than flying. They help with gliding, staying warm, and signaling dominance.

Wattle – These red, fleshy areas under the beak help with cooling. Like the comb, wattles also signal a chicken’s health and readiness to mate.

Hackles – These long neck feathers can puff up when chickens feel threatened. They’re mostly seen on roosters and help them look more intimidating.

color in the chicken and then write the correct part of the chicken in the box.

Beak – Used for eating, drinking, pecking, and even communication, the beak is one of the most essential parts of a chicken’s body.

Books About Chickens for Kids

If your kids are curious about chickens beyond the worksheet, these books are a great next step—they’ve all been hits in our home.

A Kids Guide to Keeping Chickens. This one’s perfect for kids who dream of having their own backyard flock. It’s packed with real-life tips on raising chickens and is written in a way that’s easy for kids to understand without feeling too “teachy.” It made my son seriously consider becoming a chicken farmer.

Count Your Chickens. A sweet and simple read for preschoolers, this picture book follows a little girl counting her way through a day with her chickens. The rhymes are fun, and the illustrations are colorful and lighthearted—great for early readers who like animals.

Chickenology. Out of all the chicken books we’ve tried, this is the most visually fun and information-packed. My son loved flipping through the pages and spotting all the chicken breeds. It dives into everything from chicken behavior to anatomy and even quirky chicken facts, all with bright, detailed artwork that keeps kids engaged.
