Why do we celebrate Juneteenth?
Juneteenth marks the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the freedom of all enslaved people in the state, following President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation issued over two years earlier.
The proclamation had freed enslaved individuals in Confederate states, but enforcement required the presence of Union troops.
Known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, Juneteenth celebrates African American culture and history. It serves as a time to reflect on the long struggle for freedom and the ongoing pursuit of racial justice and equality.
