Geography Scattergories (Free Printable Game)
Geography Scattergories has been one of our favorite ways to mix learning with a bit of friendly competition.
Itโs a simple printable game that gets kids thinking fast about countries, landmarks, rivers, and more, all while brushing up on geography without it feeling like schoolwork.
Weโve used it for quiet mornings, group lessons, and even road trips, and it always sparks interesting conversations (and the occasional debate over whether โMount Doomโ counts as a real mountain).

What is Geography Scattergories?
Geography Scattergories puts a geographic twist on the classic game by challenging players to think of place-based answers for each category, all starting with a specific letter.
Itโs a fast-paced, brain-teasing way to review world knowledge while having fun.
Each printable page includes 10 themed categories, such as country, city, river, mountain, island, national park, and body of water (like ocean, lake, or sea).
Players work through the list using the letters at the top of the page, like DUNE, CITY, or PORT, and try to come up with unique answers that no one else has listed.
Each new letter set offers a fresh challenge, encouraging creative thinking, quick recall, and a good bit of geographical curiosity.

Geography Categories
The printable includes six Scattergories game boards, each with a different set of four starting letters at the top: DUNE, CITY, LAKE, MESA, PORT, and GULF.
Every board features the same 10 geography-themed categories:
- Country
- City
- River
- Landmark
- Mountain
- Island
- Capital City
- Body of Water (ocean, lake, or sea)
- State in America
- National Park
Players use the letters to come up with answers that fit each category, and aim to list something no one else has thought of. It’s a simple setup, but the challenge changes every round.
Educational Benefits
Geography Scattergories builds quick-thinking and recall as players search for countries, rivers, and landmarks that match tricky starting letters.
Itโs one of those rare games where kids are learning without even realizing it.
Whether working solo or in groups, it encourages collaboration, strengthens memory, and helps expand geographic vocabulary in a natural, low-pressure way.
We’ve had moments where we paused mid-game to look something up, like whether Madagascar counts as a continent (it doesnโt, but it sparked a great discussion!).
