What is the digestive system?

The digestive system is like a food factory inside your body.

It helps break down the food you eat and turn it into energy and nutrients.

It’s made up of different organs, like the stomach, intestines, and liver, that work together to digest and absorb the good stuff from your food.

Whatever’s left over becomes poop, and your body gets rid of it.

Mouth

The mouth is where the process of digestion begins.

It plays a crucial role in biting, chewing, and tasting food. Teeth help break down the food into smaller pieces, while the tongue helps move it around. Saliva in the mouth moistens the food and aids in swallowing.

Esophagus

The esophagus is a muscular tube connecting the mouth to the stomach.

It carries swallowed food from the mouth to the stomach using coordinated muscle contractions called peristalsis. The food goes down the esophagus without you needing to think about it.

A word bank at the top lists 'Mouth, Small Intestine, Large Intestine, Esophagus, Stomach' for labeling the diagram, bordered by blue and red beads.

Stomach

The stomach acts as a food blender, receiving the chewed food from the esophagus.

It mixes the food with strong acids and enzymes, resulting in the formation of a semi-liquid mixture called chyme.

The stomach further breaks down food and helps eliminate harmful bacteria. It also sends signals to the brain to indicate when we feel full, preventing overeating.

Small intestine

The small intestine is a long tube nestled in the abdomen.

It is responsible for further breaking down the food through the action of special juices from the pancreas and liver.

The small intestine has tiny finger-like projections called villi, which absorb nutrients from the food and transport them into the bloodstream for energy and nourishment.

Large intestine

After the small intestine, the remaining food enters the large intestine.

It primarily focuses on absorbing water from the food, making the waste more solid in the process.

Additionally, the large intestine hosts beneficial bacteria that help with the final breakdown of nutrients and produce certain vitamins.

Label parts of the digestive system

On the digestive system labeled diagram, you will see the same picture of the digestive system just with the correct words pointing to the correct area of the body.
