Craft supplies needed:
- cardstock (or if you want to print it on colored paper we love this colorful cardstock)
- washable paints (we always go with washable for easy cleanup!)
- coloring pens
- paintbrush
- googly eyes (optional, but adds a fun touch)
- Wipes!! (trust us, these are a lifesaver for quick cleanups!)
How to make
Head to the bottom of this page to download and print the penguin template. It’s designed to print on one page in portrait orientation.
While standard paper works fine, cardstock gives a sturdier, more polished finish, especially if you’re planning to keep it as a holiday keepsake.
Set up your supplies and let the kids pick their paint colors! For a classic penguin look, we like black fingers and a yellow palm, but let your kids choose whatever colors they love.
Paint a thin layer of color onto their hand using the paintbrush. Wipes nearby will help you keep things tidy!
Once their hand is ready, place it gently on the template, with fingers pointing down and the palm positioned just below the penguin’s head. Help them press down evenly to ensure the whole handprint transfers well.
Carefully lift their hand up to avoid smudges—it’s like a little reveal moment for them to see their penguin appear!
Allow the paint to dry completely. Then, let the kids color in the penguin’s details, like its beak and the snowy background, and maybe add googly eyes for a fun, animated look.
This simple craft is perfect for some cozy, creative time together, and it’s always a hit with kids.
Plus, it’s a cute keepsake to look back on for years to come. Enjoy the mess, the laughter, and the little penguin creations that make holiday crafting so special!
