Who were the Greek Gods?

In Greek mythology, the gods were a collection of powerful deities who were believed to have control over various aspects of the world and human life.

There were twelve main gods and goddesses known as the Olympians, who lived on Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece.

Here is a list of the twelve Olympian gods and goddesses and their domains:

  1. Zeus – King of the gods, god of the sky and thunder.
  2. Hera – Queen of the gods, goddess of marriage and childbirth.
  3. Poseidon – God of the sea, earthquakes, and horses.
  4. Demeter – Goddess of agriculture and fertility.
  5. Athena – Goddess of wisdom, war, and crafts.
  6. Apollo – God of music, poetry, prophecy, and healing.
  7. Artemis – Goddess of the hunt, the moon, and childbirth.
  8. Ares – God of war and violence.
  9. Aphrodite – Goddess of love, beauty, and sexuality.
  10. Hephaestus – God of fire, metalworking, and crafts.
  11. Hermes – God of commerce, thieves, and travelers.
  12. Dionysus – God of parties.

These gods and goddesses were worshipped in various temples and festivals throughout ancient Greece and were often depicted in art, literature, and mythology.

But what about Hades?

Hades is another big name in Greek mythology, but he’s not one of the twelve main Olympian gods. He was in charge of the underworld and looked after the dead. Hades is Zeus and Poseidon’s brother and was one of the first big gods.

He was known for being strong and sometimes scary, but he was also fair when it came to ruling the underworld. In the stories, when people passed away, Hades would decide where their souls should go. To a nice place called the Elysian Fields if they were good, a so-so place called the Fields of Asphodel if they were just okay, or a bad place called Tartarus if they were really bad.

People often thought of Hades as dark and mysterious, and sometimes they thought he was mean. But there are also stories where he shows a kinder side. Like the one where he falls in love with Persephone, Demeter’s daughter, and takes her to be the queen of the underworld with him.
