It is the order in which you do calculations, so everything in parenthesis first, then exponents, etc.
- Parenthesis (brackets)
- Exponents (powers)
- Multiplication
- Division
- Add
- Subtract
We like to remember it using mnemonics though: “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally.”

How to use Photomath to check the answers
I’ve just come across my new favorite app, photomath. It is a free app (you can pay for it, all I have is the free version though.)
When the kids have tried to calculate the correct answer they can check their calculations using photomath.
If they have any wrong they can check the solving steps. So they can understand where they went wrong.
We use Photomath all the time. My son is currently doing Algebra 1 (check out our Teaching Textbooks review) and if he gets a wrong answer that I can’t help with we use Photomath.
Personally, I only consider it cheating if you are not learning from it. So we always use it together so I know he only uses it for one question. And we always check the solving steps.
Of course, for math tests, he isn’t allowed to use it. But we both love Photomath.
