What is an acrostic poem?
An acrostic poem spells out a word or phrase with the first letter of each line.
Typically related to the poem’s subject or theme.
Each line serves as a clue, and the poem’s structure reinforces its message.
Acrostic poems can be written on any topic and are used for creative writing or to reinforce learning.
More importantly, they are a really fun way to introduce poetry to kids.
Examples of a St Patrick’s Day acrostic poem
This is an example of a St Patrick’s Day acrostic poem:
Shamrocks, symbols of Ireland’s pride,
Traditional parades with joy and pride,
People dressed in green from head to toe,
A toast to heritage, with laughter and woe,
Tunes from pipes and drums fill the air,
Remembering Ireland’s history and care,
Irish eyes smiling, so bright and bold,
Celebrating with food, drink, and stories told,
Keeping traditions alive, year after year,
Saint Patrick, the patron saint, brings cheer,
Dance the jig and sing a joyful tune,
As we celebrate St. Patrick’s month of March.
Yellow is the color of gold.
An example of a SHAMROCK acrostic poem:
Symbol of Ireland, the shamrock shines bright,
Holding a special place in Irish hearts with its green light.
A symbol of luck, the shamrock is often worn,
Marking St. Patrick’s Day and the spirit of the morn.
Representing the Holy Trinity, this simple leaf,
Offers hope and brings joy, a symbol beyond belief.
Celebrated with pride, this emblem of the Emerald Isle,
Keeps the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day alive.
An example of a LEPRECHAUN acrostic poem:
Lively and mischievous,
Enjoys a pot of gold,
Prancing through clovers,
Rainbows are his threshold,
Eccentric with his green hat,
Cheery and always glad,
Having fun with magic,
Always a joy to have.
Unpredictable and small,
Nimble on his feet.
